NEA - sponsored landscape survey of historic tourist sites originally designed for the working class tourist to access along newly constructed state roads. Dating from 1895 - 1950, the sites in MODERN NATURE represented a time that holds little in common with the didactic ecotourism of today. Existing subtropical landscapes were molded into Euro-agrarian mythologies, narratives from the age of exploration and interpretations of Eden. In other words, these sites, designed by amateur salesmen and entrepreneurs, reveal the way people thought about nature before it was threatened.
