Paintball is an industry of equipment suppliers. All the playing fields are made by amateurs, using whatever materials remain on the land from its previous use and whatever can be salvaged within an hours' drive. Like apocalyptic folk sculptures, these improvised theater sets reflect the detritus of an industrial century - agricultural machines, building debris, shipping containers, obsolete communication towers, cable spools, loading pallets, railroad ties, junked cars, concrete sewer pipes and truck tires. They are almost always sited on low-valued land, swampy plateaus and fallow farms. They are homemade recreational battlefields, sets for spontaneous theatrical events, scattered everywhere throughout the interstitial spaces of America.
